MamAtoB Update – Recent Terror Attacks

Following the recent spate of horrendous terrorist attacks committed around Europe and further a field we thought we would post a relevant update to assist customers.

Travel insurance as a general rule will pick up medical costs for any injuries or worse caused by a terrorist attack but this isn’t always the case, there are some policies that would exclude this important cover. In order to reassure you we thought it right to point out that our MamAtoB policy would cover the medical costs for injuries in the unlikely event that you were caught up in an attack.

Should the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise that a situation/area is too dangerous to travel to and specifically advises against all travel to that area or country, your tour operator or airline would normally give a refund or offer an alternative destination, this is dependant on their individual terms and conditions. Your insurance policy would not normally cover this.

If you happen to be in an area or country where an attack has just happened or is taking place, transport may be provided either by the tour operator or the British Government in conjunction with the FCO and local authorities but again this based on advice from the FCO and isn’t something that travel insurance can normally be relied on to deal with. If you have curtailed your trip due to FCO advice some tour operators may offer you a small refund for the unused part of your trip but again, this is dependant on their individual terms and conditions.

Please be aware if the FCO says the area is safe to travel and you have a disinclination not to travel due to your own perceived risk, your travel insurance will not usually cover cancellation of the trip but it would be worth talking to your travel agent/tour operator/ airline who may be willing to change your destination or travel schedule.
